This Clevedon-based vocal ensemble began singing under the name of Miscellany in 1984 when a group of six or seven friends gave their first informal concert. Membership has been very gradually increased to the present total of eleven. On many occasions they have appeared with Nigel Nash, Sheila Rice or Susan Gregory and are fortunate to be able to call upon the services of other distinguished local accompanists from time to time. Several members of the group are accomplished vocal or instrumental soloists, lending variety to the choir's concert programmes. Despite a busy schedule with more than twenty engagements each year, Miscellany members are remarkably tenacious and over half have been with the group for more than a decade. Essentially a domestic operation, rehearsals have always taken place in the friendly atmosphere of a member's home. Miscellany has been happy to accept invitations to appear at numerous venues in Bristol and the South West, including Bristol and Clifton Cathedrals, aboard the ss Great Britain and also in the French town of Épernay. They were delighted to be the first musicians to be invited by the National Trust to perform at Tyntesfield; in near freezing temperatures in December 2003 they presented a matinée and evening performance of seasonal music and readings in the Chapel and were invited to perform there again in December 2005. A CD of the 2003 event is now available. As illustrated by their two CDs, Miscellany, led by Andrea Argent, performs music in a wide range of styles spanning eight centuries. Over the years, they have won many classes at various festivals, notably the Bristol Eisteddfod, and were particularly pleased to be highly commended finalists in the HTV televised Sing Out Competition held in 1996 and 2000. The majority of Miscellany's performances are to raise funds for national and local charities, but they also sing for private celebrations and other organisations. |
